No. There is no FDA-approved generic Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus in the United States. The FDA's own list of approved drugs and their patents shows only Novo Nordisk's brand products for semaglutide1.

That surprises people, because generic semaglutide is real. Canada approved its first one in April 2026, and India has them too. Here's where things stand, and what you can actually buy today.

Is there a generic Ozempic in the US?

Not yet. Every semaglutide product in the FDA's Orange Book belongs to Novo Nordisk1:

ProductFormGeneric in the US?
OzempicWeekly injection, type 2 diabetesNo
Wegovy and Wegovy HDWeekly injection, weight lossNo
Wegovy pillDaily tablet, weight lossNo
RybelsusDaily tablet, type 2 diabetesNo

The name you'll see on the label is semaglutide. That's the drug's generic name, not a generic product. Searching "generic name for Ozempic" gives you semaglutide, but it doesn't mean a cheaper version exists here.

When do the US patents expire?

The key date is December 5, 2031. That's when the patent covering the semaglutide molecule itself expires, as listed with the FDA for Ozempic, Wegovy and the Wegovy pill1.

An earlier patent on the molecule already ran out on March 20, 2026, so headlines saying "semaglutide's patent expired" are half right. The one that still blocks US generics is the 2031 patent1.

It isn't the whole picture, though:

  • Later patents. Novo also lists patents on formulations, pens and uses that run as late as 20411. A generic maker has to clear or challenge those too.
  • Exclusivity periods. Newer products carry their own FDA exclusivity: the Wegovy pill to December 2028 and the 7.2 mg Wegovy HD strength to March 20291.
  • Settlements. Brand companies often settle patent cases with generic makers on a launch date that isn't published in the FDA's list.

So the honest answer is: not before late 2031 for the core patent, and no confirmed US launch date has been published. Be wary of anyone promising a date.

Where is generic semaglutide approved?

Outside the US, where Novo's patents ended sooner.

Canada was the first G7 country to approve one, and Health Canada said six more applications were under review as of June5. It also notes that generics there often cost 45% to 90% less than the brand3.

Where generics stand
US date is the core patent's listed expiry; actual US launch timing has not been published.

Does a generic semaglutide work the same as the brand?

That's the point of the approval. Health Canada describes its generics as "pharmaceutically equivalent" to the brand, and says its review checks that any differences don't affect safety, effectiveness or quality3. Sun Pharma's Indian version went through its own Phase 3 trial before approval6.

Same molecule, same dose ladder, same weekly shot. Sun's Noveltreat, for example, comes in the familiar 0.25 to 2.4 mg pen strengths6. What changes is the maker and, usually, the price.

How will you know when a US generic is real?

When it arrives, it will look boring, and that's how you'll recognize it:

  1. It shows up in the FDA's Orange Book under semaglutide with a company name other than Novo Nordisk2.
  2. A regular US pharmacy fills it with your prescription, just like any other generic.
  3. Your insurer may switch you to it, the way plans do with other generics.

Until all three happen, treat any "generic Ozempic" ad aimed at US buyers as something else: a compounded product, a foreign product, or worse. If you're unsure, ask your pharmacist to look the product up; they can tell you in a minute.

Can you buy Canadian generic semaglutide in the US?

Not as an approved product. A Canadian generic has no FDA approval, so a US pharmacy can't dispense it. Online sellers advertising "Canadian generic Ozempic" to US buyers sit outside the US system. If something goes wrong, you have little recourse, and you can't be sure what's in the pen.

If you live in Canada, ask your pharmacist about the generic. If you're in the US, the options below are the legal ones.

Is compounded semaglutide a generic?

No, and this is the most common mix-up. A generic is FDA-approved after the agency checks that it matches the brand. Compounded semaglutide is mixed by a pharmacy and is not FDA-approved: the FDA does not review it for safety, effectiveness or quality before it's sold7.

The FDA has also warned that some compounders use salt forms of semaglutide, such as semaglutide sodium or acetate. Those are different ingredients from the one in Ozempic and Wegovy, and the agency knows of no lawful basis for using them7. Ask any compounded program which form it uses.

That doesn't make every compounded program a bad choice. It means you're picking a different product, with different oversight, and you should know that going in. Our page on where compounded semaglutide stands legally explains the rules in plain terms.

Without a generic, these are the US options as of October 4, 2026 (every form is priced side by side in how much semaglutide costs):

OptionFDA-approved?Typical monthly cost
Wegovy pill, 1.5 mg startYes$149 (NovoCare and TrumpRx8)
Wegovy pen, first two monthsYes$199, then $349 on NovoCare
Ozempic on TrumpRxYes$1998
Compounded semaglutide programs we trackNomedian about $199 (range $79 to $499)
Commercial insurance with Novo's savings cardYesas little as $25

A few things worth knowing:

  • The pill gets pricier as you climb. It's $299 a month at the 9 mg and 25 mg doses on NovoCare. Our Wegovy pill cost guide has the full ladder.
  • Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes. Prescribing it for weight loss is off-label. See Ozempic vs Wegovy for why the dose ceilings differ.
  • There is a generic GLP-1, just not semaglutide. Generic liraglutide, the drug in Victoza and Saxenda, has been FDA-approved since December 20242. It's an older, different drug taken as a daily shot, so ask your prescriber whether it fits you if price is the main barrier.

For a side-by-side of current self-pay prices, our cheapest semaglutide board lists what each program charges and what's included. Our Wegovy cost and savings guide covers the insurance side.

The bottom line

From my years on semaglutide, I know how much the price matters. A real US generic would change that, but the core patent runs to the end of 2031 and no launch date has been published. Until then, your choices are the brand at self-pay prices, insurance with the savings card, or a compounded version, which is not a generic. Pick knowing which one you're getting.

A few more quick ones

Is there a generic Ozempic in the US?

No. As of October 2026, the FDA has approved no generic version of Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus. Every semaglutide product on the FDA's list belongs to Novo Nordisk.

When will Ozempic go generic in the US?

The core patent on the semaglutide molecule is listed to expire December 5, 2031. Later patents run to 2041, and no confirmed US launch date has been published.

What is the generic name for Ozempic?

Semaglutide. That is the name of the drug inside Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, not a cheaper generic product.

Is compounded semaglutide the same as generic?

No. A generic is FDA-approved as a match for the brand. Compounded semaglutide is made by a pharmacy and is not FDA-approved or reviewed for quality before sale.

Where is generic semaglutide available?

Canada approved its first generics in 2026, including Sevmia for weight loss in June. India approved generics too. Neither is an approved option for US patients.
