Check bmiMD availabilityA BMI number can tell you when a treatment conversation may be appropriate. It cannot tell you whether Wegovy is safe for you, which formulation fits or whether your insurer will pay.
Think about eligibility in three stages: the approved use, your clinician's assessment and the payment route. Keeping those separate helps you avoid a misleading “you qualify” advertisement.
What BMI qualifies an adult for weight-management treatment?
Novo Nordisk's patient information uses BMI 30 or higher for obesity, or 27 or higher with a weight-related medical problem for overweight1. Your clinician documents the height, weight and relevant condition rather than relying only on a self-entered online number.
Examples in the manufacturer's information include high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Having an example condition is not a guarantee of a prescription or insurance approval.
| Question | Who answers it |
|---|---|
| Does my situation fit an approved treatment use? | Your clinician using the current product label |
| Is Wegovy suitable with my health history and medicines? | Your prescribing clinician |
| Will insurance pay for this formulation and indication? | Your plan's benefit and authorization process |
| Can this online clinician treat me here? | The provider under the relevant state rules |
Are the pill and injection approved for the same people?
Do not assume every Wegovy formulation has identical indications. The current prescribing information distinguishes injections, tablets and specific devices, including age limits and separate uses2.
For example, the injection includes weight management in eligible adolescents aged 12 and older with obesity. An adult BMI table is not a pediatric screening rule, and the tablet should not be assumed approved for a child because the injection is.
Ask about the exact product named on the prescription. Our oral vs injectable semaglutide guide compares routines, while the prescriber determines suitability.
Does cardiovascular disease or liver disease change the conversation?
Wegovy has approved uses beyond weight management in specified populations, including cardiovascular risk reduction and treatment of certain MASH liver disease. The product label sets the relevant conditions and formulations2.
That does not mean every person with heart disease, a raised liver test or fatty liver qualifies. Bring the actual diagnosis and specialist records to the appointment. Coverage can also differ when the request is for a separate approved indication rather than weight loss alone.
For the evidence, read Wegovy's heart benefits and Wegovy for MASH.
Bring more than a BMI number
- Your current medicine list and medical history.
- Records for the health condition relevant to treatment.
- Your insurance details and the exact product being considered.
What safety questions should you be ready to answer?
Bring your full medication list and describe relevant medical history. The prescribing information lists contraindications including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN2 and serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide or product ingredients. It also includes important pregnancy and other safety precautions2.
Do not leave out another GLP-1 medicine because it came from a different clinic. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy plans, earlier reactions and any current symptoms. A paid intake does not replace this assessment.
Does meeting the BMI requirement mean insurance will approve Wegovy?
No. HealthCare.gov recommends checking the covered-drug list and explaining any medication exception request through your clinician3. A plan can require authorization or exclude a use even when a prescription is medically appropriate.
Before paying for a program, ask whether it checks your benefit and submits the relevant paperwork. Our Wegovy prior authorization guide covers documents, tracking and denial reasons.
What if you have Medicare?
Medicare's temporary GLP-1 Bridge has its own age, drug-coverage and clinical requirements. Those are different from the general adult weight-management threshold4.
Use the Medicare eligibility page with your clinician rather than assuming a BMI of 27 plus any medical condition qualifies. Ordinary Part D coverage for other indicated uses is a separate route.
Can you qualify through an online appointment?
An online clinician still needs to assess your health, and location matters. HHS explains that authorization to practice across state lines depends on jurisdiction and licensing pathways5. Tell the program where you will be during the visit.
If treatment is appropriate, compare the medication, follow-up and total cost before enrolling. Our online provider guide and semaglutide cost page help you review the practical details without promising a prescription.
A few more quick ones
Can I get Wegovy with a BMI below 30?
For adult weight management, overweight at BMI 27 or higher with a qualifying weight-related condition may fit the treatment criteria. Your clinician assesses suitability and any other indicated use.
Does qualifying medically mean my insurer covers Wegovy?
No. The plan may require authorization or exclude a treatment use. Check the benefit and the exact formulation separately.
Do children use the same Wegovy eligibility rules as adults?
No. Age, pediatric obesity criteria and formulation-specific approvals matter. A clinician should use the current label rather than an adult BMI chart.
