Check Bodybuilding Health+ availabilityA pen that does not behave as expected leaves two different questions: did the device work, and how much medication entered your body? A photograph of a wet patch cannot reliably answer the second one. Do not take an extra injection to compensate for an uncertain dose. Contact the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber for instructions specific to what happened.
This guide concerns a device problem, not a treatment that seems to have stopped reducing appetite. If the pen worked normally but weight loss has slowed, use our plateau guide and discuss progress with your clinician.
First, identify the device in your hand
The current U.S. Wegovy label lists a single-dose automatic pen, a single-dose prefilled syringe and a multidose, single-patient FlexTouch pen. These are different presentations with different instructions. A prefilled syringe is not a vial you fill yourself. The automatic pen's yellow-bar instructions do not apply to every device bearing the Wegovy name1.
Read the carton and its Instructions for Use before trying advice from a video. Look for the exact device name and strength. If the instructions do not resemble your device, stop and ask the pharmacy to identify it. Manufacturer labeling can include an approved presentation before it is available locally; a label listing does not prove your pharmacy stocks it.
What the clicks and yellow bar mean
For the single-dose automatic pen, the first click marks the start; the second click happens while the injection continues. Keep the pen firmly against the skin until the yellow bar stops moving. The bar does not have to fill the entire window. Lifting at the second click can interrupt delivery2.
If the bar does not begin moving, the manufacturer's instructions say to press more firmly against the skin. If it still does not start, or stops during injection, contact the healthcare professional or manufacturer. Once removed, the needle cover locks: this pen cannot be stopped and restarted later1,2. Do not test-fire it into the air, force the mechanism, pry it open or try to extract the remaining medicine.
| What you noticed | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Second click while the pen remains against the skin | For the automatic pen, continue until the yellow bar stops moving |
| Bar never starts or stops unexpectedly | Contact your healthcare professional or the manufacturer |
| Liquid on the skin or pen lifted early | Ask the pharmacist or prescriber about the uncertain dose before taking more |
| A dial, replaceable needle or different instructions | Identify the exact device; do not apply automatic-pen steps |
What if liquid leaked onto your skin?
Removing the automatic pen early or losing firm contact can leave medication on the skin and an incomplete dose. The manufacturer's guidance describes maintaining pressure for the next injection; it does not tell you to calculate the loss from the puddle2. Do not estimate milligrams from the size of a drop, count remaining liquid or combine leftovers with a new pen.
Tell the pharmacist whether injection had started, whether the bar moved, when you lifted the pen and what you observed. Separate observations from guesses: “I heard two clicks and lifted it” is more useful than “I probably received half.” Ask for a clear plan covering today's uncertainty and the next scheduled injection.
Keep the details needed for support
Have the carton, strength, lot number, expiration date and approximate injection time available. Describe any damage, unusual storage or freezing concern. Our storage guide explains why appearance alone cannot settle an uncertain temperature history.
The manufacturer asks people reporting a pen problem to keep the pen and packaging until speaking with customer care2. Keep an affected device safely out of reach and ask how to retain or return it without handling an exposed needle. Do not send a loose used pen through ordinary mail. For routine used devices, follow safe sharps disposal.
Make the next injection easier to check
Ask the pharmacist to demonstrate your exact presentation, including how completion is recognized. A caregiver can attend if seeing the indicator or holding the device is difficult. Use injection-site guidance to prepare questions about a stable site; changing the device steps yourself is a separate matter.
Before the next dose, confirm the prescribed strength and the plan you received after the malfunction. An uncertain partial injection is not automatically the same as a missed dose. Use missed-dose guidance only after clarifying which situation applies. If you already took an additional dose, contact a healthcare professional promptly; FDA has documented serious dosing errors involving compounded semaglutide3.
A few more quick ones
Does the second Wegovy pen click mean the injection is finished?
For the single-dose automatic pen, no. The second click means injection is ongoing. Keep applying pressure until the yellow bar stops moving, following that device's instructions.
Should I inject another pen if Wegovy leaked?
Do not guess a replacement dose. Contact your pharmacist or prescriber before taking more; the amount delivered cannot be established from the wet patch.
Can I restart a Wegovy pen after lifting it?
The single-dose automatic pen's needle cover locks after removal. It cannot be stopped and restarted later. Do not force, open or reuse it.
Do FlexTouch pens use the same troubleshooting steps?
No. FlexTouch is a different device. Use its own Instructions for Use and ask the pharmacist to demonstrate the exact pen you received.
