The airport is not the place to discover that your pen needs a different storage plan from the one you read online. Start with the product name and device on the box, then plan around the total trip: transport, hotel storage and the journey home.

These steps cover travel preparation. They do not change the dose your clinician prescribed.

How long can semaglutide stay out of the refrigerator?

The answer depends on the product and device, not just the active ingredient. The manufacturer's current labels give these rules12:

Product or deviceTravel storage rule
Wegovy single-dose pen or syringeBefore removing the cap, up to 28 days at 46–86°F in the original carton
Wegovy FlexTouch multidose penAfter first use, up to 56 days refrigerated or at 59–86°F
Ozempic multidose penRefrigerate before first use; after first use, up to 56 days refrigerated or at 59–86°F
Compounded semaglutide vialFollow the dispensing pharmacy's instructions; do not borrow brand-pen limits

Do not freeze the medicine. The brand labels require disposal after freezing and contain device-specific light and heat precautions. Read the instructions supplied with your own product, especially if you receive a new device.

Can you take semaglutide through TSA screening?

TSA allows medically necessary liquid medication in carry-on bags, including amounts over the ordinary liquid limit, with separate screening. Tell the officer what you are carrying3.

Keep the pharmacy label and packaging with the medication so it is easy to identify. If you need cooling packs, declare those too. TSA's guidance notes additional screening for partially frozen or slushy cooling accessories; ask about the current procedure before you travel3.

For international travel, check destination rules and airline requirements as well. Passing a U.S. checkpoint does not establish that another country permits importation of your medicine or supplies.

Before you start

Should you use a cooler?

A cooler can be useful when refrigeration is required or when your itinerary could expose medication to heat. Plan it with the pharmacist around the product's temperature limits and the expected duration.

Avoid packing a pen directly against a frozen cooling element. Also think about the parts of a trip that feel short but can get hot: a car trunk, the beach, a shuttle bus or luggage left outside a hotel room.

A hotel mini-fridge is not automatically safe. Check whether it freezes items near the cooling plate. If the temperature history is uncertain, contact the pharmacy before using the medicine.

What should you pack?

Use a small, organized kit:

  • Medication in its labeled packaging.
  • Any required needles or other supplies for your specific device.
  • A safe plan for used sharps.
  • The pharmacy and prescriber's contact details.
  • Your written dosing instructions.
  • Your first-use date and discard date, where applicable.

Keep enough time before departure to resolve a missing refill or damaged shipment. Ask about insurance vacation overrides or refill timing rather than ordering an extra supply without checking the rules.

What about time zones or a missed dose?

Plan the schedule with your pharmacist before leaving. The missed-dose guide explains why instructions differ between products. Do not double a dose to make up for a travel disruption or use a different medicine's timing rule.

If a trip overlaps a dose increase, ask the prescriber how to handle it. Travel adds uncertainty about food, hydration and access to help; your clinician should decide whether the existing plan needs adjustment.

Can your online clinician see you while you are away?

Tell the program where you will physically be for an appointment. HHS explains that cross-state practice depends on the relevant state rules and the clinician's authorization4. A clinician who treated you at home may not be able to hold a visit in every destination.

Ask this before you leave if a follow-up is due. Also confirm whether the pharmacy can deliver to your temporary address rather than assuming a hotel refill is available.

What if your medication gets hot or freezes?

Do not judge it by appearance alone. Record the product, device, approximate temperature and duration, then call the pharmacist or manufacturer. The label's limits are the reference point; a cooler bag or clear-looking liquid cannot prove the medicine stayed suitable for use.

A few more quick ones

Can I fly with Wegovy or Ozempic?

TSA permits medically necessary medications subject to screening. Tell the officer about injectable medication and cooling supplies, and check international rules separately.

Is every semaglutide pen safe at room temperature for 56 days?

No. Wegovy single-dose devices have a different limit from multidose Wegovy FlexTouch and Ozempic pens. Follow the instructions for your exact product.

Can I use a pen that froze and thawed?

The brand prescribing information says not to use medication that has frozen. Contact the pharmacist about replacement.
