Check Bodybuilding Health+ availabilityIf your mood changed after starting semaglutide, the change deserves attention even when a large safety review is reassuring. Two questions need separate answers: does research show an increased risk across treated groups, and what care do you need for symptoms happening now?
If you might harm yourself, cannot stay safe or face immediate danger, seek emergency care now. Ask someone you trust to stay with you while help is arranged. Do not wait for an online discussion to establish whether the medicine caused the crisis.
What changed in January 2026?
On January 13, FDA requested removal of the suicidal-ideation-and-behavior warning from Wegovy, Saxenda and Zepbound after a comprehensive review found no increased risk with GLP-1 medicines. Its analysis of 91 placebo-controlled trials, including 107,910 patients, also found no increased risk of relevant psychiatric events such as depression or anxiety1.
The current Wegovy prescribing information reflects the warning's removal2. Older screenshots or medication articles may therefore describe a warning that has since changed. This was a change to a specific warning, not removal of Wegovy's other contraindications or safety precautions.
FDA's conclusion concerns the overall evidence for the drug class. It does not mean that every symptom occurring during treatment is unrelated or that anyone with a psychiatric history has no need for follow-up. FDA still asks patients to report new or worsening depression and unusual mood or behavior changes1.
Depression and suicidality are different outcomes
Depression can involve persistent low mood, loss of interest, impaired concentration and changes in sleep or appetite. A clinician considers the pattern, duration and effect on daily life rather than diagnosing it from one tired afternoon4. Suicidal thoughts or behavior require their own assessment and can never be dismissed because a questionnaire score or weight-loss result looks favorable.
| Question | What the evidence can tell you |
|---|---|
| Did FDA find increased suicidality with GLP-1 medicines? | No increased risk was identified in its comprehensive review |
| Does that establish semaglutide as a depression treatment? | No; a safety finding is not proof of antidepressant benefit |
| Can an individual develop concerning symptoms during treatment? | New symptoms still need assessment and an individual care plan |
Our semaglutide evidence guide explains the medication's established benefits. Treating depression is a separate clinical decision.
What did semaglutide-specific trials show?
A 2024 analysis examined psychiatric outcomes in the STEP 1, 2, 3 and 5 trials of weekly injected semaglutide 2.4 mg. It found no increased depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation/behavior compared with placebo. The small average improvement in depression scores was not considered clinically meaningful3.
The limits matter: this was a post hoc analysis in people without known major psychopathology, with low depression scores at baseline. It is not a trial proving treatment of major depression, nor a guarantee for every psychiatric history. It also does not establish identical findings for every dose, oral product or compounded preparation.
For a reader already treated for depression, the useful next step is to discuss that history explicitly. Ask how the clinician will coordinate with the person managing your mental-health care, rather than treating an eligibility questionnaire as the complete assessment.
If you feel lower, flatter or unlike yourself
Contact your prescriber promptly. Describe what changed in ordinary terms: less interest in usual activities, frequent crying, emotional numbness, poor sleep, difficulty working or thoughts of self-harm. You do not need to prove causation before asking for help.
Bring a short timeline: when symptoms began, medication changes, missed doses of other treatments, sleep, eating and any significant life events. Include supplements and nonprescription products. This helps the clinician consider several explanations without automatically attributing everything to semaglutide or automatically ruling it out.
Fatigue and sleep changes can raise overlapping questions, but those guides cannot diagnose depression. If symptoms are persistent, worsening or impairing daily life, arrange clinical assessment rather than repeatedly searching for reassurance.
If you also take an antidepressant
Do not stop an effective antidepressant, change its dose or abruptly alter semaglutide treatment based on this article. Ask the prescriber and pharmacist to review the exact combination. Wegovy delays stomach emptying and its label advises attention to absorption and monitoring of relevant oral medicines2. A mechanism-based explanation is not the same as a dedicated interaction study of your antidepressant.
Our antidepressants guide can help organize that conversation; individual drug review remains necessary. Dosing and side-effect guidance addresses a different part of the treatment plan. Keep both mental-health follow-up and metabolic care on the calendar: a reassuring population finding should support a thoughtful decision, not silence a new symptom.
A few more quick ones
Does semaglutide cause depression?
FDA's 2026 GLP-1 review did not identify increased depression or suicidality risk, and a semaglutide trial analysis was reassuring in its studied population. That cannot settle the cause of an individual's symptoms; report new or worsening depression to your clinician.
Was the Wegovy suicide warning removed?
FDA requested removal in January 2026 after its review found no increased risk. The current Wegovy prescribing information reflects the warning's removal.
Can semaglutide treat depression?
These safety findings do not establish it as a depression treatment. A small average depression-score change in the STEP analysis was not considered clinically meaningful.
What if I have thoughts of harming myself?
Seek emergency care immediately if you might act on the thoughts or cannot stay safe. Ask a trusted person to stay with you while help is arranged; do not wait to determine whether medication caused the symptoms.
